Local Profile:

The Pittsburgh Section of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) is a technical institute sanctioned by the American Society of Civil Engineers. It is our goal to support the local structural engineering profession in the region.

Structural engineering spans a wide variety of project types, materials of construction and design criteria. The practicing structural engineer faces a daunting task in developing and maintaining a working knowledge of emerging topics and fields, in addition to existing information required to solve diverse project requirements.

It is the hope and intent of the SEI to support practicing structural engineers and students in this task by providing:

• Informational Seminars and PDH's
• Networking Opportunities
• Tours of Local Construction Sites

The SEI also strives to advance the structural engineering profession through outreach opportunities.

As part of Pittsburgh Section strategic planning the SEI Chapter has set long term goals to:

• Develop a full day technical course
• Increase student involvement and investigate establishing a local graduate student chapter
• Increase member involvement

Pittsburgh has a long history of engineering and industry. From bridges to buildings, and from project planning to completion, our structural professionals have a tremendous depth of experience and knowledge. SEI desires to promote open dialog of this information between firms, enriching the quality of Pittsburgh’s structural engineering community.

National Profile:

SEI is a vibrant, 20,000 plus community of structural engineers within the American Society of Civil Engineers. SEI started on October 1, 1996 in order to serve the unique needs of the structural engineering community more effectively while also being their voice on broader issues that shape the entire civil engineering community.

Members of SEI can take advantage of discipline-specific products and services while also receiving all of the benefits of ASCE membership.

Because SEI has members who are leaders in both structural engineering practice and academia, SEI provides wonderful networking opportunities while also stimulating coordination and understanding between academia and practicing engineers - driving the practical application of cutting edge research.

SEI advances our members' careers, stimulates technological advancement, and improves professional practice.

Want to Get Involved?

The SEI committee is seeking new Committee Members! This is a great opportunity to join and serve the engineering community! The main obligation of a Committee Member is to help organize technical events throughout the year. Some examples of duties would be finding potential venues, speakers and/or sponsors, and helping to organize event signage and information.
