The History and Heritage Committee of the ASCE Pittsburgh Section works to promote awareness of the rich history of civil engineering achievements in Western Pennsylvania, and to identify historic projects and infrastructure that merit recognition. A recognition of particular focus is designation as an
ASCE National Civil Engineering Historic Landmark.
Presently, there are nine such landmarks in Western Pennsylvania (see the map at the ASCE NCEHL website), including the four shown below plus:
- Davis Island Lock & Dam (on the Ohio River at Bellevue, just west of Pittsburgh)
- Dunlap’s Creek Bridge (over Dunlap Creek in Brownsville)
- Mason-Dixon Line (at the terminus point of Mason& Dixon’s Line, near Brown’s Hill Monument along the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border)
- Pennsylvania Turnpike-Old Section (at Bedford)
- Point of Beginning, U.S. Public Lands (at the border of Pennsylvania and Ohio, on the Ohio River)
If you are interested in joining the ASCE Pittsburgh Section History and Heritage Committee or helping the committee with its work, please contact the History and Heritage Committee Chair David Dzombak (dzombak@cmu.edu) .
