ASCE defines "Sustainable Design" as: The process of applying natural, human, and economic resources to enhance the safety, welfare, and quality of life for all of society while maintaining the availability of the remaining natural resources.
Sustainability Objectives
In order to highlight and advance the principles of sustainable design, the ASCE Pittsburgh Section has identified the following objectives:
- Educate ASCE Pittsburgh members on relevant, important and cutting-edge civil engineering sustainable design principles through meetings and events.
- Promote the message of sustainability for all civil engineering disciplines by supporting the institute chapters and technical groups within ASCE Pittsburgh.
- Collaborate with like-minded associations throughout the Pittsburgh region in order to promote the use of sustainable design principles on civil works.
- Heighten the awareness of sustainable design principles through outreach efforts. Outreach efforts may consist of articles within the monthly section newsletter, an annual sustainability award for regional projects of merit, or participating in community related sustainability events.
One of the committees goals over the 2015-2018 period is to work with teh local EWRI Chapter to promote the Envision Sustainable Infrastructure Rating System.
