Design / Construction of the              I-579 Urban Open Space ‘Cap’  Project

with Roger Eaton, PE (HDR); Kyle Smith, PE (HDR);

and Robert Byrnes, PE (PennDOT)

The project site is in downtown Pittsburgh and is completely bounded by city streets/state roadways. The Cap structure spans over I-579, otherwise known    as Crosstown Boulevard, and supports a public park of approximately 1.2 acres containing greenspace, ADA compliant pedestrian walkways, patios, a pavilion,  a water feature, and various seating areas.  Underneath, the eight lanes of  interstate are provided a minimum vertical clearance of 16’-6”, lighting, and    signage for this portion of I-579.  The bridge structure consists of 126 unique  48”x66” prestressed concrete box beams supporting an 8” cast-in-place concrete deck, all founded on micropiles at the Abutments and drilled caissons at the piers.

All proceeds benefit SEI Futures Fund
