Geotechnical Systems, Uncertainty, and Risk

Geotechnical engineering involves designing complicated systems with sparse datasets and judgement.  Professor Baecher’s Terzaghi Lecture covers how we can quantify sources of uncertainty, understand the risks, and explain the risks to owners and stakeholders.  He will introduce the historical mathematical background and show how it is applied through a series of illustrative case histories.  At the end of this lecture, you will have a new perspective on risk and exactly what is uncertain in geotechnical models.
