The Pittsburgh International Airport Terminal Modernization – The Effects of COVID-19 on Design and Construction
The Pittsburgh International Airport Terminal Modernization Program (TMP) is a local initiative announced in 2017 which aims to improve the efficiency and enjoyability of the existing airport terminal. The new approximately 700,000 square-foot terminal will include airport operations, consolidated airline operations, ticketing, baggage claim, a meet-and-greet area, security checkpoint, retail and concession options, and a multi-modal complex with a 3,300-space parking garage, rental car facilities and entrance roadways designed to improve the passenger experience. Airport officials were forced to pause design efforts in March 2020 due to COVID-19, but the pandemic has offered some important insights into how public health and engineering go hand-in-hand.
