ASCE GeoInstitute Pittsburgh Chapter Presents
Reinforced Soil Technology: From Experimental to the Familiar
2010 Terzaghi Lecturer
Dr. Robert D. Holtz, PE, DGE, Dist. M. ASCE
Monday, March 7, 2011
Engineer's Society of Western Pennsylvania
337 Fourth Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15222
Dr. Holtz is a pioneer in the application of geosynthetics to the improvement of and reinforcement of soil. His contributions to the geotechnical applications of geosynthetics have been theoretical, experimental, and practical in nature. He has developed several instruments including a specialized strain gauge for geosynthetics. Dr. Holtz’s
Terzaghi Lecture emphasizes the practical applications of the soil reinforcement principles.
Dr. Holtz received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1970. He then worked as a research engineer at the Swedish Geotechnical Institute. In 1973, he moved to Purdue University where he rose to the rank of Professor in 1985. In 1988, he became a professor at the University of Washington. Dr. Holtz is coauthor or editor of 22 books, and has published over 260 technical papers. The second edition of his textbook, “An Introduction to Geotechnical Engineering” was issued last year. The first edition of the book went through 40 printings. Dr. Holtz now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington. However he still teaches classes and maintains an active consulting practice that includes projects both in the US and overseas. ASCE and the Geo-Institute are currently preparing a geotechnical special publication (GSP) to honor Dr. Holtz. The GSP, which will be titled “Sound Geotechnical Research to Practice”, is scheduled to be published in March 2013.
Registration is $40 for Pittsburgh Section members, $50 for non-members, and $10 for student members. Please contact Stephanie Chechak at
